If you have not noticed as yet...social media is a MUST for all businesses.

Many people think social media is “easy."

While it may be easy to share an image and post small commentary, there is actually a lot of data analytics and strategy that goes into it.

A social media manager is the person that monitors, filters, contributes to, and guides the social media presence of a business, product, or brand.

I started my side hustle as a Social Media Manager in 2015 when I worked as a Marketing Manager and found that I absolutely love learning about it and could see its impact on smaller businesses that did not have a huge ad budget.

I am not going to lie; I DIYed many things I did not always get my clients the results that I was hoping for. I had no idea about brand, niche, hashtags, or social media strategies.

So, you might be wondering what skills do you need to have as a Social Media Manager?

Here are some of the skills that would be great to start with, but not to worry, you can learn these skills as you go:

1️⃣ Copywriting - social media managers do a lot of writing, sometimes more than a dozen posts each day.

2️⃣ Research - social media managers must stay up-to-date with the ever-changing world of social and digital media, the new measurement tools others are using, and what competitors post daily.

3️⃣ Social Media Expertise - it may seem obvious, but a social media manager needs to have social media skills.

4️⃣ Customer Services Skills - when 34.5% of customers refer to social media as their customer care option, social media managers need to make sure they have the skills to match. Customers often look to social media accounts for help answering questions about products and services. If no one is there to answer those questions (even on nights and weekends!), their impressions of that brand will likely sour.

5️⃣ Visual Intelligence - while much of the content you’ll put on social media will be written, visual content is also crucial. The right gif or photo can be shared hundreds or even thousands of times, and you need to understand the types of images that work well on each social network.

6️⃣ Adaptive - flexibility is important in any marketing role, but even more so in social media management. The social media landscape moves so quickly that being adaptive is an absolute necessity.

As a side hustle social media manager, I found that I could work my 9 - 5 and still make money on the side.

Did I make a lot? Nope!

I did not know who I was helping, with what or even what results I could get them.

This all changed in April 2020 when I signed up with a coach that focused on social media, and OMG, did my business skyrocket from there! That investment was scary AF, and I did not know if I would have the money to pay for the coach, but I did it anyway!

I made that investment back x12 since then! REALLY!

And how is it going?

I made more than my 9 - 5 salary in just 8 months, and I could quit! The best feeling ever - don't get me wrong, it was also terrifying.

And 1 year after signing with my first coach, I just made a huge investment (5 x the cost of the first one); this one, I closed my eyes and just did it.

Why am I telling you about having to invest in yourself?

Because the moment you do that, you are telling the universe that you are serious.

I could not make this amount of money over the last year in the 4 years (COMBINED) before signing a coach.

I know that you are reading this know you can be EXTREMELY successful as a freelance social media manager; you need to believe that investing in yourself will get you there faster.

You have 2 options you can continue doing everything DIY and hoping for the best, or you can take the leap and put the right foundations in place to set your business up for success.

Which one will it be?
