Why I belief you should give a shit about having email marketing as part of your marketing strategy. An effective email marketing strategy convert prospects into customers, and turn first time buyers into recurring customers.

BONUS: You can automate the entire process! From setting up a automated welcome emailer as soon as they set up to a sequence of emails that follows.

With all the talk of video, artificial intelligence, virtual reality, and chatbots, it sometimes seems like email marketing should follow in the footsteps of the fax.

But if you think email is dead, you’re missing out. The truth? Email marketing is still going strong today, and is possibly the best possible strategy for your business. Email marketing is still ranked as the most effective marketing channel, beating out social media, SEO, and affiliate marketing.

Why is that? With all the hype over new channels, why is decades-old technology still one of the most effective marketing strategies? Just think how often people still make use of their emails.

Today more than ever it is important that you build your email lists, what would you do if you woke up tomorrow and your social media platforms are gone? You do not own the followers on social media but you do own your email list.

Ok, if your heart is racing don’t worry there is still time to build your email list.

First things first, before we begin I’d simply like to remind you to be on your best behaviour at all times and remember… you’re a guest in their inbox.

What makes a bad email campaign?

  • Constantly pitching your product or services

  • Sending emails so often your emails become spammy

  • The first sign that you’ve received a bad newsletter is that you don’t recall ever asking to receive it.

  • Let’s be blunt…If your emails aren’t meeting your readers’ expectations, they are going to unsubscribe from your email list.

  • Not Looking Professional

  • Using Cliche and Sales-Heavy Language

  • Forgetting Your Mobile Users. Up to 70% of your readers will be reading your email on their mobile device. If you’re not ensuring your audience can read your emails on their phones or tablets, you’re making a very expensive mistake.

  • Relying Too Heavily on Images. Your first instinct may be to load up your emails with beautiful, eye-catching, professional pictures that will excite your readers. While this isn’t wrong in and of itself, it’s important to remember that many of your readers may view emails with images turned off. If you don’t have a plan B, you’re missing these clients altogether.

What makes a great email campaign?

  • Emails with great content

  • Send an email as soon as they have signed up introducing yourself and letting them know how often they can expect an email from you

  • You’ll have a much more successful campaign if people expect sales pitches every once in a while.

  • Make sure everyone remembers you—the best way to do this is not to let your emails lapse for too long.

  • I find that the most compelling newsletters are those that do a great job of mixing messaging and updates.

  • By scheduling a set of emails to send in advance, you can prevent “going dark” for any length of time.

  • Talk About Them, Not About You

  • Make Your Emails Personal

  • You don’t want to overload your readers by sending too many emails, but you want to use your email marketing to build loyalty and engagement with your target audience. That’s a tight balancing act.

Your email list is one of your most valuable resources, and if you learn how to treat it right, the cost of doing so will pay for itself.

One of the most shocking things I still see so many people do is buying their email list. Please stop doing this! Those email addresses are not your ideal client, your ideal client will be signing up for your mailers if you put in the work.

If you’ve been ignoring email marketing, it might be time to re-evaluate your strategy. Are you read to grow your email list?
